Zambezi Animal Welfare Services (ZAWS) is a non-governmental organization that was established in 2014 by a group of friends who loved animals. Their aim was to improve the health and welfare of domestic animals – mostly dogs and cats. They noticed a need for education and awareness regarding the needs and care of animals as well as a lack of care due to poverty. ZAWS hopes to inspire people to own a dog or cat as a friendly pet and to love and care for them. There is no other domestic animal welfare organization in the Southern or Western Provinces of Zambia, so everything ZAWS does makes a significant difference.ZAWS has carried out a number of activities/programmes with the support of the community and local government. ZAWS relies solely on the generosity of donors to provide food, bedding and materials for their shelter, and funds for their constant vet bills and development of their new shelter in Linda.
